Speech recognition runs on your device

Chrome has been able to recognise speech locally since version 138. Once the language pack is installed, neither the recording nor the recognised text leaves your computer. The settings show whether that is currently the case — you don't have to take our word for it, you can check.

Without a language pack, Google handles recognition, as with any other dictation extension. SpeechPilot tells you which route is active.

What it does

Dictation where the cursor is. Input fields, text areas and editors — without a detour through a window of its own.

Replacements for what recognition gets wrong. Technical terms, proper names, abbreviations. Enter them once, and they come out right.

Text blocks by shortcut. Say a short shortcut and the whole text appears. With a safeguard against sending the same text twice.

A bar with profiles. Your own texts on buttons for each website, writing into fields you defined beforehand.

Emoji and punctuation by voice. Capitalisation after the end of a sentence, too.

What it doesn't do

No user account. No sign-in. No ads, no tracking. Your macros and lists stay in your browser, not on a server. Export to a file is there from the start — what you enter stays yours.

Note on use

Some platforms set rules on whether and how pre-written texts may be used. Check the rules of the site you are working on and follow them — the responsibility for that is yours.
